Natural Gas System Improvements

Empowering You Through Safety and Reliability

The power to be your best starts with your peace of mind. That's why DTE Energy makes significant safety and reliability investments to our natural gas delivery system every year. From new pipelines to system upgrades to groundbreaking technology, these improvements ensure a safe, reliable supply of this clean-burning, economical energy. The end result is a trusted natural gas system that allows our customers to focus their energies on what's most important to them.

Natural Gas Main Improvements

Maintaining and enhancing our natural gas system is vital for our customers to run their homes and power their businesses. This year, DTE Energy plans to upgrade 140 miles of gas pipeline, a 40 percent increase over last year.

In addition to the continuous improvement of our natural gas network, DTE Energy is a national leader in working efficiently to control costs. It's one of the many ways we are helping to build the advanced, cost-effective energy infrastructure to fuel Michigan's economy.

Home, Business and Network Safety Inspections

Our goal is to prevent problems before they happen. That's why every year DTE Energy conducts 300,000 natural gas meter safety inspections. This helps ensure that homes and businesses are safe places to live and work.

What's more, we bring that same attention to detail to our entire natural gas delivery network. Using an inspection tool called a "Smart Pig" that travels inside pipelines, DTE Gas engineers and technicians gather detailed data about the condition of the steel lines to identify and prioritize required upgrades.

Compressor Stations

Moving natural gas safely is an important part of our energy mission. Compressor stations in Kalkaska, Gaylord, Six Lakes, China (Belle River Mills Compressor Station) and Milford are crucial in moving natural gas to homes and businesses across Michigan. In total, we have 44 compressor units, generating 136,795 horsepower, to ensure a steady, safe supply of natural gas to our customers.

Smart Meters

Smart meters — also known as advanced meters — improve customer safety and satisfaction in a number of ways. Since 2008, we have installed more than 2.5 million smart meters to enable us to pinpoint service interruptions and speed restoration times. Smart meters also provide more accurate readings and empower our customers with more information and control of their energy usage. Learn More About Smart Meters
