DTE Gas customers now have more options in purchasing their natural gas. With Gas Customer Choice, a program approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission, you can now choose your natural gas supplier.

The good news is that if you wish to remain a DTE Gas customer, no action is required. DTE Gas will continue to supply the gas your gas at the regulated gas rate. You can even use our Lock-In feature to ensure we are your natural gas supplier.

Gas Customer Choice Program

As a regulated gas utility, DTE Gas buys and stores gas for customer use and delivers it to homes and businesses as needed. The Michigan Public Service Commission regulates the price you pay for gas supply. It is determined by the price we pay for gas on the open market and may change from month to month. We do not make a profit on gas supply.

Gas Customer Choice (GCC) is a voluntary program open to all customers, giving you the option to purchase your gas supply from an alternative gas supplier (AGS). By choosing an AGS, you have the choice to purchase your gas at the unregulated prices offered by the AGSs.

An AGS may approach you about the GCC program. If you would like to switch to one of these alternative suppliers, you may enroll with them. In order to switch your gas supply to an AGS, you will need to provide the alternative supplier with your DTE Energy gas account number. The gas account number is located on the monthly statement you receive from us. Do not provide your account number to an AGS if you do not wish to switch.

If you enroll with an AGS by telephone, the supplier must send you a copy of the contract within seven days. Once you have received the contract, residential and small commercial customers with annual usage of 5,000 Ccf or less may still cancel as long as they do so within 30 days of the day they agreed to the service. This 30-day unconditional cancellation right does not apply to commercial customers with annual usage in excess of 5,000 Ccf, unless so specified within the AGS contract.

If you choose an AGS, that company will supply your gas at a price agreed upon by you and the AGS. Regardless of who supplies your gas, DTE Gas will continue to deliver the gas to your home or business, read meters, administer billing and respond to all emergencies and leaks.

The Michigan Public Service Commission maintains a list of suppliers participating in the GCC Program.

Note: DTE Gas and its parent company, DTE Energy, are not affiliated or associated with any of the participating alternative gas suppliers (AGS) licensed by the MPSC. AGS do not represent the views or opinions of DTE Gas or DTE Energy. DTE Gas and DTE Energy do not endorse, recommend or certify any alternative gas suppliers.

Know the Facts Before Switching

You have the option of continuing to purchase natural gas from DTE Energy at a regulated rate or from a number of AGSs licensed by the Michigan Public Service Commission. If you’re considering a change, be sure to ask the right questions:

  • What price do you charge for natural gas?
  • What are the terms and length of the contract?
  • Will the price change during the contract?
  • What are my cancellation rights?
  • Is there a cancellation penalty? If so, how much?

Be sure to compare AGS gas rates to DTE Gas' Gas Cost Recovery (GCR) rate found on the Detail portion of your DTE Energy statement.

Beware of Scams

DTE Energy and its affiliates, including DTE Gas, do not engage in telemarketing or door-to-door sales. Additionally, DTE Energy is not affiliated or associated with any alternative gas suppliers (AGS).

Once activated, your account cannot be switched to another gas supplier unless you call DTE Energy and request that the lock be removed. There is no cost for this service.

No. DTE Energy and DTE Gas are not affiliated or associated with any of the participating suppliers. Supplier representatives, agents and employees are strictly forbidden from representing themselves as an employee, affiliate, subcontractor or agent of DTE Energy or DTE Gas.

Is there a cost to switch suppliers?

You can switch to another supplier at any time. However, be sure to ask your potential supplier(s) if a cancellation fee or a minimum term applies. A fee of $10 will be assessed for each additional switch of suppliers within the same 12-month period.

How do I enroll with an Alternative Gas Supplier?

You can enroll in the program at any time. A gas supplier may contact you directly or you can call a supplier yourself at the numbers listed on the Michigan Public Service Commission's Suppliers list. After you enroll with your chosen supplier, that supplier will send the enrollment request to DTE Gas for processing.

If you choose to participate in the GCC program, you must remain a GCC customer for 12 months. If you switch back to buying gas from DTE Gas after participating in the GCC program, you are required to remain a DTE Gas customer for 12 months before you can choose a new supplier.

Who do I contact if I have a complaint about a supplier?

You should first try to resolve the complaint with the supplier. If this is not possible, contact the Michigan Public Service Commission by calling 800.292.9555.

What if I change my mind after choosing a new supplier?

Residential and commercial customers with an annual usage of 5,000 Ccf or less are provided a 30-day unconditional cancellation period. This cancellation period begins the day after you enter into the agreement with the supplier. This 30-day unconditional cancellation right does not apply to commercial customers with annual usage in excess of 5,000 Ccf, unless so specified within the Alternative Gas Supplier's (AGS) contract.

At the end of the contract term with the AGS, you may switch to another supplier or return to DTE Gas gas supply service. However, if you switch before the contract expires, the AGS may charge an early termination or cancellation fee. Carefully review your contract to determine whether such fees apply.
